When is the US stock market open?
Short answer: Regular trading runs 9:30am to 4:00pm US Eastern time, Monday to Friday, excluding market holidays. Pre-market sessions typically start from 4:00am and after-hours run to 8:00pm Eastern, but which part of that window you can access depends entirely on your broker.
Why extended hours matter
Earnings are released outside the regular session, deliberately. By the time the market opens, the reaction has already happened. Access to extended hours is the difference between acting on the news and reading about it.
Why extended hours are dangerous
Liquidity is a fraction of the regular session. Spreads widen, order books thin out, and a market order can fill several percent away from the last printed price. Most brokers only accept limit orders in these sessions for exactly this reason.
Time zone reality check
The US open is 2:30pm in London, 4:30pm in Frankfurt, 5:30pm in Dubai, 7:00pm in India and 10:30pm in Singapore. If you are trading US stocks from Asia, you are trading at night — plan around that rather than fighting it.

Can I place orders when the market is closed?
Yes. Orders queue and execute when the relevant session opens. A market order queued overnight executes at the open, which after news can be a very different price.
Do all brokers offer pre-market trading?
No, and session lengths differ widely between those that do. Some offer full pre-market from 4:00am; others open only 30 minutes early.
