None of the following is our own view on any stock — it is a same-day record of market action, analyst-firm calls and company news across the tracked universe on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the last trading day of the third quarter.
U.S. stocks finished mixed after a cooler inflation print and a strong consumer-spending reading pulled in opposite directions. The S&P 500 slipped about 0.23% to 7,653.56 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.86% to 50,906.05, while the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.23% to 30,408.50. The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.3% in August and 3.4% from a year earlier, below the 3.7% annual rate economists expected, and the core measure the Federal Reserve watches most closely rose 0.2% on the month and 3.0% on the year, against forecasts of 0.3% and 3.3%. Futures pricing for a quarter-point rate increase at the October 28 meeting dropped to about 39.3% from 50.9% a day earlier. At the same time, consumer spending rose 0.9% in August after a 0.1% gain in July, a 0.6% increase after inflation and the fastest pace since March 2025, and the 10-year Treasury yield still climbed 3.8 basis points to about 5.29%, a fresh high since 2007. Gold fell 0.60% to about $4,157 an ounce, U.S. crude rose 1.54% to around $93 a barrel and Bitcoin was little changed near $83,650.
Information technology led the sectors with a 0.61% gain while consumer staples lagged with a 1.68% loss. Outside the tracked universe, Gen Digital (GEN) rose 5.61% as it recovered from the reaction to its offer for GoDaddy earlier in the week, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) added 3.89% after announcing a $1.2 billion order from Vultr for rack systems built on Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) Helios platform; AMD itself rose 0.69% to $611.76. Among the staples, General Mills (GIS), also outside the tracked universe, fell 4.88% after saying chief operating officer Dana McNabb will replace Jeff Harmening as chief executive, and rising yields weighed on the dividend-paying group more broadly. Walmart (WMT) dropped 2.70% to $103.92 even as it pledged $15 million to Feeding America to strengthen food-bank logistics; its consensus is a Strong Buy on 29 Buys and two Holds with a $128.20 average target, and it also appeared on a same-day screen of dividend-growth stocks rated Strong Buy by top-ranked analysts, alongside Nucor (NUE) and Ecolab (ECL), both outside the tracked universe, where the top-analyst average targets were $285.50 for Nucor and $319.88 for Ecolab.
Micron (MU) ended the regular session essentially flat at $1,065.11 and then rose about 1.7% in late trading after reporting fiscal fourth-quarter results that beat on both lines. Adjusted earnings came in at $33.42 a share against a $31.72 consensus, and revenue of $54.23 billion topped the $51.33 billion expected; a year earlier the company earned $3.03 a share on $11.32 billion of revenue. Management guided current-quarter earnings to $38.15 a share, plus or minus $1, versus a $35.47 consensus, and revenue to $60 billion to $63 billion against $57.40 billion expected. The quarterly dividend was left at $0.15 a share, with about $2.16 billion remaining on a $10 billion buyback authorization that management describes as its preferred way to return cash. The stock is up roughly 273% this year and carries a Strong Buy consensus from 20 Buys and one Hold with a $1,469.25 average target, figures that may shift as analysts update their models after the report.
Intel (INTC) rose 3.71% to $120.23 after a report said a Brookfield-managed investor will put up as much as $30 billion for a 49% stake in its Arizona factory operations. The structure preserves Intel's borrowing capacity and cash, but it comes with minimum production and on-site inventory commitments that could trigger volume-related damages if missed. The consensus is a Hold on seven Buys, 22 Holds and two Sells with a $117.56 average target that sits slightly below the share price after a gain of more than 220% over the past year. Microsoft (MSFT) added 0.77% to $512.90 to close out a quarter in which it gained about 39%, its best three-month stretch since the first quarter of 1991, although the stock is still up only about 9% for the year after falling 28% in the first half; its consensus is a Strong Buy on 35 Buys, one Hold and one Sell with a $558.86 average target. Apple (AAPL) rose 1.10% to $333.02, Alphabet (GOOGL) 0.93% to $344.08 and Nvidia (NVDA) 0.51% to $228.38 after chief executive Jensen Huang said AI data centers could add a million U.S. jobs. Meta Platforms (META) fell 1.84% to $725.18 even as its Muse AI agent passed five million downloads since its September 8 launch, a milestone it said ChatGPT took 56 days to reach.
The day's most notable rating change was at Target (TGT), where HSBC's Joe Thomas upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold and raised his target to $190 from $125, arguing that second-quarter results showed a traffic-led recovery taking hold and that guidance looks conservative enough for earnings to beat in the near and medium term. The shares were up about 2% during the session but closed only 0.13% higher at $156.63; the consensus is a Moderate Buy on 12 Buys, 14 Holds and two Sells with a $165.96 average target. Outside the tracked universe, Oppenheimer's Brian Bittner initiated Dutch Bros (BROS) at Buy with a $66 target, roughly 70% above a stock that has fallen about 37% this year, and Goldman Sachs upgraded TC Energy (TRP) to Buy from Neutral, calling its recent selloff overdone. Wells Fargo trimmed its year-end 2027 gold forecast to a range of $5,200 to $5,400 an ounce from $5,400 to $5,600, citing higher interest rates and a dollar index that is up 3.2% this year, while noting that central-bank buying and exchange-traded fund inflows have recovered since the spring.
Ford (F) fell 1.95% to $12.06 after a Wall Street Journal report said F-150 sales will decline this quarter because a supplier problem halted production of the truck for about a week; Ford's U.S. sales are down 10% through August and F-Series sales are down 11%, though the company plans to build an additional 150,000 trucks this year and expects fourth-quarter output to be back on track. It also issued a headlight recall covering 2025 to 2027 Expeditions and most 2026 Super Duty models. The consensus is a Moderate Buy on seven Buys and six Holds with a $16.29 average target. Boeing (BA) slipped 0.85% to $186.09 despite winning the U.S. Navy's F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter contract, valued at more than $20 billion, which it will run alongside the Air Force F-47 program it won last year; Ethiopian Airlines also signed for eight 777-8F and two 777F freighters with options for eight more. Boeing's consensus is a Strong Buy on 17 Buys and one Hold with a $272 average target. Nike (NKE), which fell 1.26% to $35.39, reports results on Thursday alongside Accenture (ACN), which is outside the tracked universe. As always: a price target is one firm's estimate rather than a forecast of what a stock will do, a quarter-end session and an after-hours earnings reaction can both reverse once the next day's trading begins, and none of this is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
