U.S. stocks extended their advance as bond yields and rate-hike expectations eased. The S&P 500 gained 0.59% to 7,819.83, a record close, after touching an intraday high near 7,844; the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.49% to 51,521.28 and the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.48% to 31,224.47. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 4.2 basis points to 5.26% and the 30-year slipped 2.7 basis points to 5.63%, both still at multi-decade highs. Futures pricing put the odds of a quarter-point Federal Reserve hike at the October 28 meeting at 19.4%, down from 22.1% a day earlier and 50.9% a week ago, although a December hike remained the most likely outcome at about 70%. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he intends to bring down long-dated yields and called for lower government borrowing. Brent crude fell as much as 2.3% in the morning before turning positive as Iran stepped up attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Utilities led the sectors with a 3.01% gain. Constellation Energy (CEG) jumped about 12% after announcing a long-term 3.6-gigawatt power agreement with Alphabet (GOOGL), which includes 890 megawatts of nuclear energy over 20 years and 2,700 megawatts not tied to a specific generation source. Vistra (VST) was also among the best performers on speculation that it could receive a $4 billion federal loan for power-plant and infrastructure upgrades. NRG Energy, Public Service Enterprise Group and NiSource, all outside the tracked universe, rose with the group.
Healthcare was the only notable laggard, down 0.15%. Moderna (MRNA) fell about 7.8% after a World Health Organization spokesperson said the agency's initial assessment found a low risk of a plague epidemic in Russia and a very low risk for the wider European region, following the death of a laboratory worker at an anti-plague institute in Irkutsk; no official cause of death has been determined. Moderna's consensus is a Hold from 20 analysts with a $110.44 average target, well below the current price. Novavax, outside the tracked universe, dropped almost 10% on the same news. Illumina and Idexx Laboratories, also outside the tracked universe, declined along with DexCom (DXCM) and Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO).
Semiconductors and AI hardware carried the technology rally. Marvell Technology, outside the tracked universe, rose about 5.8% after its investor day, where it lifted its fiscal 2028 revenue outlook to $20 billion from $18 billion, above the $18.2 billion analysts expected, and chief executive Matt Murphy said he expects $70 billion to $90 billion of revenue in fiscal 2031; Nvidia (NVDA) is also investing $2 billion in the company. Broadcom (AVGO) gained about 3.7% and Dell Technologies (DELL) about 3.9%, while Nvidia was little changed. Memory and storage names went the other way: Seagate fell about 9.2%, Western Digital about 6.9% and SanDisk about 2.6%, all three outside the tracked universe.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) climbed about 2.8% after chief executive Lisa Su said the company plans to substantially increase its supply in 2027 because demand still exceeds available capacity. Mizuho raised its AMD target to $705 from $580 with an Outperform rating, estimating that the market for CPUs serving agentic AI could reach about $80 billion by 2030, and Citi lifted its target to $800 from $575 with a Buy rating. AMD's consensus is a Strong Buy from 36 analysts with a $662.38 average target, roughly in line with the current price after a gain of about 195% this year. Intel (INTC) fell about 3.2% despite the same Mizuho report pointing to rising CPU demand across the industry; its consensus is a Hold from 30 analysts with a $115.23 average target.
In autos, Goldman Sachs raised its General Motors (GM) target to $112 from $103 with a Buy rating and cut its Ford (F) target to $14 from $16 with a Neutral rating in a note previewing the sector's results; GM rose about 2.2% and Ford about 1%. Truist stayed cautious on Tesla (TSLA) even after the company's better-than-expected third-quarter deliveries. Stellantis, outside the tracked universe, faces strike-authorization votes on October 17 and 18 by the Canadian union representing about 9,000 of its workers, with talks stalled over the future of its idled Brampton, Ontario assembly plant.
Among other company news, Option Care Health, outside the tracked universe, surged about 33% after agreeing to be acquired by CD&R and McKesson for $32.05 a share in cash; William Blair downgraded it to Market Perform from Outperform, saying it does not expect competing bids. CoreWeave rose about 5% and Nebius about 7.4%, both outside the tracked universe, with CoreWeave still drawing attention from a recent Rosenblatt Buy rating and a $250 target, the highest on Wall Street. CrowdStrike (CRWD) gained about 2.3% after announcing its fourth annual cybersecurity startup accelerator with Nvidia and Amazon (AMZN) Web Services, and Amazon rose about 2%. Paramount Skydance completed its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, and the combined company, now called Skydance, had its credit rating cut by Fitch to BB from BB+; all are outside the tracked universe. After the close, Constellation Brands, outside the tracked universe, reported fiscal second-quarter comparable earnings of $3.74 a share against a $3.55 consensus and guided full-year comparable earnings to $11.20 to $11.90 a share against an $11.71 consensus, and its shares fell about 5% in extended trading. As always: a price target is one firm's estimate rather than a forecast of what a stock will do, a reported takeover price can change before closing, and none of this is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
