None of the following is our own view on any stock — it is a same-day record of market action, analyst-firm calls and company news across the tracked universe on Friday, October 9, 2026.

U.S. stocks closed higher as oil eased and technology shares recovered part of Thursday's losses. The S&P 500 rose about 0.6% to 7,811.09, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about 0.8% to 51,654.95 and the Nasdaq 100 added about 0.5% to 30,883.15. Brent crude slipped about 0.4% to roughly $103 a barrel after President Trump repeated that the United States will not strike Iran before the November 3 midterm elections and described talks with Iran as productive. The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment index for October fell to 46.3 from 48.1 in September, a five-month low, and consumers' year-ahead inflation expectation rose to 4.7% from 4.6%. The 10-year Treasury yield edged up about one basis point to 5.24%, the 30-year yield held at 5.60%, and the market-implied odds of a quarter-point rate increase at the Federal Reserve's October 28 meeting stood at 19.4%.

The day's largest moves came in telecom. SpaceX, which is outside the tracked universe, agreed to buy nationwide 800 MHz wireless spectrum licenses from Grain Management in a deal reported at $8 billion, and chief executive Elon Musk said its Starlink Mobile service aims to become a major U.S. mobile carrier once it has approval from the Federal Communications Commission. Low-band spectrum of this kind travels long distances and passes through buildings more easily, which would let a satellite operator serve phones in cities as well as rural areas. AT&T (T) closed down 9.85% at $22.17 and Verizon (VZ) fell 8.75% to $41.65, while T-Mobile US, outside the tracked universe and an existing Starlink partner, dropped 13.27% to $148.58. Comcast (CMCSA) and Charter Communications, the latter untracked, also declined, and communication services was the weakest S&P 500 sector with a loss of about 0.4%. AST SpaceMobile (ASTS), which supplies satellite connectivity to Verizon, sold off as well. Verizon's consensus is a Moderate Buy from 15 analysts, with six Buy and nine Hold ratings and a $49.92 average target. A KeyBanc analyst said the added spectrum makes Starlink a more credible mobile operator, while a Citi analyst argued the pullback in wireless shares could prove an opportunity given longer device replacement cycles and lower customer churn.

The same deal lifted tower owners, on the view that a new entrant could add demand for wireless infrastructure. Real estate was the best-performing sector with a 1.88% gain, led by American Tower (AMT) along with Crown Castle and SBA Communications, both outside the tracked universe. Moderna (MRNA) was also among the S&P 500's top performers, rising about 13% to around $223 in afternoon trading and passing its previous 52-week high of $212.22 on its first day as a member of the Nasdaq 100. Humana, untracked, and Datadog (DDOG) were among the index's other leading gainers.

In analyst calls, Barclays downgraded Joby Aviation (JOBY) to Underweight from Equal Weight and cut its target to $4 from $6, arguing that the company's plan to build, operate and service its own aircraft is too capital-intensive and that being first to certification may not mean winning the market; the shares fell about 7%. Joby's consensus is a Hold from eight analysts, with two Buy, three Hold and three Sell ratings and a $10.56 average target. Separately, ARK Investment bought about 149,000 shares of rival Archer Aviation (ACHR) on Thursday. Oppenheimer upgraded Fastly, outside the tracked universe, to Buy from Hold with a $35 target, citing larger contract sizes and growing sales of newer security products, and the stock rose more than 16% during the session. UBS kept its Buy rating and $300 target on Nvidia (NVDA), pointing to strong Taiwanese export data as evidence of continuing AI demand.

Apple (AAPL) closed lower after Nikkei Asia reported that the company cut October component orders for its iPhone 18 Pro models by at least 15% because of weaker demand. On the same day, analyst Dan Ives reiterated a $400 target, estimating that artificial intelligence could add roughly $75 a share in value as Apple earns services revenue from AI offered across more than 2.5 billion active devices. Apple's consensus is a Moderate Buy from 31 analysts, with 16 Buy, 11 Hold and four Sell ratings and a $337.51 average target.

Among other company news, Microsoft (MSFT) introduced Microsoft-Decision-1, an AI model built to choose quickly between predefined options rather than write long answers. The company said it makes decisions 35 times faster than OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and priced it at $0.042 per million input tokens with no charge for output; it is available through Microsoft Foundry. Microsoft's consensus is a Strong Buy from 37 analysts, with 36 Buy ratings and one Hold and a $586.14 average target. The wider rebound in AI-related shares followed Thursday's sell-off, which came after OpenAI reported annualized revenue of nearly $50 billion for September, roughly $20 billion below guidance it had given earlier. Delta Air Lines, outside the tracked universe, lowered its full-year earnings guidance to between $5.10 and $5.60 a share because of higher fuel costs. Gold rose about 1.5% and silver about 2.6%.

As always: a price target is one firm's estimate rather than a forecast of what a stock will do, an announced spectrum purchase still needs regulatory approval before any service launches, and none of this is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
